The Impossibility of Hiding Alcohol Addiction

Contrary to popular belief, alcohol addiction and dependency exist on a variety of levels. Likewise, you do not have to find yourself in a position where you need the help of alcohol detoxification centres to genuinely benefit from cutting down your own alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, a time and a place comes where for the sake of your health and wellbeing in general, you simply cannot go on denying that you have a serious problem to address.

What’s important to remember is that regardless of how hard you try, it is fundamentally impossible to hide an alcohol problem from those around you.  Whether facing an outright addiction or something of a developing alcohol dependency, it is inevitable that you will be giving off a great many signs and symptoms that those around you will pick up on.  And what’s more, the more revenue investing in are attempting to hide them, the more obvious it becomes that you have a problem.

The Impossibility of Hiding Alcohol Addiction

Mood Swings

For example, perhaps the single most characteristic sign of dependency when it comes to almost any drug across the board is that of unpredictable and inexplicable mood swings. The reason being that whether the drug is in your system at the time or you are feeling the withdrawal symptoms during a period without the drug, chances are your moods will be extremely different from one moment to the next. And it isn’t always a case of shifting from placidness to blind rage at the flick of a switch. In some instances, you may simply become more talkative, more affectionate, more aloof or in one way or another simply not yourself. And when mood swings are questioned, denial or making excuses simply make the obvious even more apparent.

Regular Disappearances

When an alcohol habit crosses the line into dependency or addiction, this is usually when those affected begin proactively hiding their activities from those around them. Having accepted the fact that they know what they are doing is wrong, they begin attempting to hide what it is they are doing from others. The only problem being that even from the earliest stages, it is usually blindingly obvious that this is the case. From regularly disappearing for no apparent reason to prolonged absences with unusual justifications and so on, hiding what it is you are doing represents absolute acknowledgement that you have a problem to address. After all, if you do not believe you have a problem in the first place, there’s no need to hide it from others.

Personal Grooming

Another common indicator of a severe or accelerating alcohol problem is when personal grooming in general ceases to be a priority. It may not be that the person in question necessarily lets their hygiene and appearance go entirely, but chances are it will become obvious that it is no longer one of their primary concerns. The more severe alcohol addiction becomes, the more likely it is the personal grooming will take second place to other activities. It may also become apparent that the individual in question is simply looking less healthy and alert than they previously did, suggesting that their alcohol problem has become relatively severe.

Commitments Suffer

Another of the unmissable and unmistakable signs and symptoms of alcoholism is when a person begins allowing the important things in their life to suffer for no apparent reason. It could be that they are frequently missing or late for appointments, that they are allowing their professional life to suffer of the they simply do not seem to have the time, energy or inclination to do a great deal at all. They may previously have participated in plenty of activities socially, though now do not seem to be interested in anything. From broken promises to missed appointments to commitments suffering in general, these are exactly the kinds of things that do nothing other than highlighting the fact that you have a genuine and perhaps advanced alcohol problem.

Aggressive Denial

Last but not least, if you personally do not believe you have an alcohol problem and are accused as such by a friend or family member, chances are you would laugh it off as nonsense. Whatever your reaction, you certainly wouldn’t be offended or concerned. By contrast, if you know you have an alcohol problem and it is pretty evident to those around you, chances are you will respond to such allegations with aggressive denial. In doing so however, you are only further confirming the fact that not only do you have a problem, but you are fully aware of the fact that you have a problem that needs to be dealt with.
